Background

Towards the end of my Visual Lease internship, I had gone through a multitude of projects and felt that there was one major missing area that I wanted to focus on. I wanted to grasp the part of the process that I was relying on my manager for, ideation. I wanted to learn the first part of the product process which is defining a need and understanding the user.

To start with, I researched customer requests to analyze pattern to determine what issues users seemed to be consistently having. From the users, a pattern emerged. The issues had all pointed towards the lack of a central notifications feature. From this, I researched competitors, studied our own system then planned, outlined, and wireframed a solution.

Takeaways

I learned how to analyze user/customer requests to discover and resolve a bigger problem through ideation and design in a product manager-like role.

I would change the way that I researched the competitors. I focused only on other direct competitors to lease accounting while I should have analyzed any product with a central notifications hub. Since I was also focused on learning the users and outlining a solution, I did not explore multiple variations of a product.

In the future I hope to have a concept I came up with accepted and sent into development. Then I would like to follow the concept and learn what would entail in a phase two or future features. I want to learn how to evolve a feature or tool from the original state.
